Hawaii

More than just beaches, the Big Island of Hawaii is famous for its culture, hiking and wildlife. From snow-capped peaks to sandy beaches, Hawaii’s diversity will take you by surprise.

Home to Kilauea Iki, the most active volcano on earth, the Big Island is a hiker’s dream come true. If wildlife is more your thing, keep an eye out for spinner dolphins and sea turtles as well as humpback whales during Winter.

Surprisingly un-touristy, it is hard not to immerse yourself in the culture. Whether it’s dancing the hula, creating a lei or learning how to catch fish the traditional Hawaiian way, you’ll leave feeling like a local.

Getting there

Jetstar offers relatively inexpensive flights into Honolulu.

Visited Hawaii back in September of 2012. Flew over from Sydney to Honolulu with Hawaiian Airlines - would thoroughly recommend them. Had a couple of days in Honolulu before departing for a 7 night cruise of the islands on Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) Pride of America. We visited the islands of Maui, the Big Island of Hawaii, and Kauai, sailing between ports overnight so every day was able to be had onshore, sightseeing or enjoying the great beaches. Each Pride of America cruise departs Honolulu on the island of Oahu on a Saturday evening (guest check in starts at 12.00 midday) so even though you might not be able to access your cabin straight away, you can avail yourself of the facilities such as pools, bars and dining rooms.
The ship docks back in Honolulu the following Saturday morning around 7am.
We had another few days in Honolulu on our return to allow for a bit more sightseeing and took in Pearl Harbour one day and the Polynesian Cultural Centre in Laie on the north eastern side of Oahu on another day. The PCC have their own full size coaches that pick up from various points in Honolulu in the morning and return you to your pick up point later that night - it is a full day trip and well worth it. In addition to the driver there is a guide who gives a running commentary about the area you are travelling through and explains the background of the PCC as well as looking after the tour group.
A return visit to Hawaii is definitely on our "To Do" list.

I forgot to mention the pod of dolphins that escorted us out of Nawiliwili Harbour when we were leaving Kauai on the last day of our cruise.
