Bibbulmun Track named in National Geographic’s Top 20 World Best Hikes.
Western Australia’s long distance walking trail, the Bibbulmun Track, has been included in National Geographic's Top 20 World Best Hikes – Epic Trails. Described as ‘Southwestern Australia's answer to the Appalachian Trail’, it was the only Australian trail named.
When National Geographic was assembling its list of the world’s great hikes it kept an eye on more than the footpath, looking for walks which travel deeper into a location’s history and culture. Although the Bibbulmun Track is a relatively new trail, it is based on much older traditions. Being named after the Bibbulmun Nyoongar people, an aboriginal group who journeyed on foot over long distances to care for and to celebrate their land.
The Track stretches just over 1000 kilometres from Kalamunda in the Perth hills to Albany on the south coast, taking walkers through one of the world’s bio-diversity hot spots. Starting in the jarrah forest of the Perth hills, the Bibbulmun Track continues south over giant granite boulders, rolling hills and along river valleys, passing huge ancient karri and tingle trees and eventually wends its way along the wild south coast.
Designed for use by people with varying fitness levels and interests, the Track can be walked as part of a relaxing day in the bush, an overnight or weekend camping adventure. For the more adventurous, why not consider an eight-to-10-week, end-to-end hike. The 49 campsites that include a shelter, bush toilet, tent sites and picnic tables, are a comfortable day’s walk apart, while towns along the way provide accommodation for those who prefer a comfy bed.
The Track is marked by yellow triangle trail markers depicting the Waugal, a symbol of the aboriginal rainbow serpent and use of the Track and campsites is free.
For those planning a walk on the Bibbulmun Track, the not-for-profit Bibbulmun Track Foundation provides a range of services for walkers, including maps and guidebooks, expert advice, guided events for all ages, hire gear, ‘Best of the Bibbulmun’ all-inclusive tours and luxury walking breaks. There is also a wealth of information on its comprehensive website.
