Lower fares with Opal

An Opal Card can save you in your day-to-day travel

Lower fares with Opal

An Opal Card not only gives you the convenience of no longer having to queue for tickets, it can also save you money.

The Gold Opal card helps you save money compared with the Pensioner Excursion Ticket because it’s pay as you go. Fares are capped at $2.50 each day so you never pay more than the Pensioner Excursion Ticket. But if you only take a couple of short bus or train rides and don’t reach the $2.50 daily fare cap, you pay less!

Only Opal offers additional savings such as the cheapest single fares and 30 per cent savings when you travel by train off-peak.

Ready to travel? Order your Gold Senior/Pension Opal card now.

Where can this be used? The article does not say. I doubt if Queensland:'s Translink would accept it. If it is only Sydney, please, no more Sydney-centric articles. This is supposed to be a nationwide web site.

Never done it but Opal website says this is the case. Opal card is used in Sydney but not sure if it is used anywhere else in NSW. I've got one but haven't used it. If you have a NSW seniors card it's free to apply for one. I'm going to just ad some money to mine when I need to use it. Note with private train lines like Sydney airport one you have to pay a surcharge as well.

Definitely not easy getting for regional pensioners ( that I am a wear of) But The government should make it more simply......... as pensioners with major disabilities ...........one would think our D Heads politicians should send us all one out in the post.

Wouldn't be much use sending it to me tia-maria as we don't have public transport in our country town, other then Trainlink that is, for which we already get a $2.50 fare and have done for years.

If I travel on public transport occasionally why would I be attracted to the Opal Card?
And, why is it they don't make it clear up front so every pensioner understands , does the credit on the Opal Card roll over from month to month, year to year.
Does it work like pre-paid mobile phone voucher for a period of 30 days and if you don't use all your allocated data you lose it altogether?.
I read that one gentleman didn't use his Opal card credit over 3 months so they cancelled his card and refunded his $10. What sort odf service is that?

you can get less than$ 2.50 trip if you travel ashort distance eg if you only go one stop on the train it might only cost 0.50c so return will cost you $1. ...tap on and tap off... this is adjusted and so you still have $1.50 credit for that day. If you go on another trip that day you will be charged $1.50 no matter where you go because anything over the $2.50 is negated. the card is good because you don't have to buy tickets and you can just tap on tap off on anything that is on the system. eventually it will be across NSW

If you buy a card and don't use it they send you back your money so they are not holding your money for no reason. the card isn't cancelled you just have to set up your top up again. it works in that you buy it and set up an automatic top up which ensures it will always be valid..lowest top up is $20. when you start to use it use it once it gets to the amount you have stipulated the top up cut off eg..$2.00 it automatically tops up from the nominated bank account
