Melbourne’s five best views

Although well known for its laneways, Melbourne also has a lot going on above the treetops. With views available across the city and the bay, here are what we think are five of the best.

Manchester Unity Building
Although now dwarfed by the many glass skyscrapers that litter Melbourne’s skyline, the Manchester Unity Building, built in 1932, still offers impressive vistas of the city from its tower that extends beyond the 12th floor. Steeped in history, you can take a one-hour tour of the building and if you work up an appetite, combine it with breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.

Madam Brussels
This is one of our favourites, with some of the best and quirkiest cocktails to sip while you check out the view across the rooftops. If you’re lucky enough to nab a seat outside, you’ll be treated with sunny skies or the lights of the city as it comes to life at night. And if you see ‘Madam Brussels’ pass by, stop and have a chat – she really is an interesting woman.

Shrine of Remembrance
From its majestic position just south of the CBD, the ‘Shrine’ as locals know it, offers a reflective view back across the city. There’s something beautifully calm and poignant about standing on the tops of the stairs looking at the city skyline and noting how it’s changed over the last few decades.

No35, Sofitel on Collins
Most views are quite spectacular at sunset and to experience the sun going down in Melbourne, without the usual associated chill in the air, grab a cocktail at No35. The views from this restaurant, located inside the Sofitel Hotel, are well worth the price of your drink (it won’t be cheap).

Pool at the Adelphi Hotel
This is possibly the most unique (and we don’t use that word lightly) view of Melbourne’s laneways. The pool at the Adelphi juts out over the edge of the hotel and, if you’re swimming alone, you can just about squeeze face down in the overhang and watch the people below pass by, completely unaware!
