But that’s not all there is to Lake Macquarie. We asked Bianca Gilmore, Tourism Marketing Coordinator at the Lake Macquarie City Council why you should visit. Here’s what Bianca had to say:

Why is Lake Mac a great place for retiree travellers?
Lake Macquarie is the perfect refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Situated just 90 minutes north of Sydney’s busy CBD, Lake Mac offers breathing space and the chance to enjoy some precious ‘you’ time. With the relaxed pace of local life and an abundance of free, or low-cost activities, time spent on the Lake is reminiscent of family holidays from years gone by. Indulge in life’s simple pleasures – walks on the beach, fresh seafood, a sunset picnic or a good glass of wine at one of our waterfront sailing clubs. Water activities are ample on the Lake. Enjoy boating or sailing, bring your own vessel, or hire one here. Lake Macquarie is also full of intriguing art treasures, including Dobell House and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.

What is the best feature/activity in the area?
The sea caves at Caves Beach are a perennially popular attraction for travellers of every age. Best experienced at low tide, visitors can make their way through the network of natural caves, before cooling off with a swim at the patrolled beach area. To experience the Lake, you can’t beat a relaxed stroll or gentle cycle along the Warners Bay Foreshore shared pathway; a flat, paved path taking in 9km of foreshore and various attractions along the way. Do as much or as little as you like, but don’t forget to treat yourself afterwards at one of the many popular cafes and restaurants in Warners Bay town centre.

What is the best time of year to visit?
Any time of year is great to visit! February and March are good, warm months that fall outside of school holidays, making it the perfect time to take advantage of Lake Macquarie’s watery attractions and activities. Later in the year, autumn and winter months are quiet and peaceful and a great time to experience the area on one of its many walking or cycling trails, or by picnicking in the sun on the water’s edge.

What is an insider tip or something only the locals would know? Any hidden gems you can share?
The Watagan Mountains and National Park are some of the area’s best-kept secrets. Scenic drives, hiking trails, wonderful lookouts and picnic spots such as the Pines all await.
