Lifeguards warn Australians against ‘world’s most venomous animal’

As the Easter holidays draw near, many look forward to a much-needed break from our daily routines. The prospect of relaxing days and a change of scenery invites us to reconnect with loved ones and rejuvenate our spirits.

For those planning to visit Queensland’s picturesque shores, the allure of the sparkling waters is undeniable. It’s a time to unwind, take a refreshing dip, and soak in the natural beauty of this coastal paradise.

However, lifeguards have issued a stark warning: the waters are not as benign as they seem.

Far North Queensland’s idyllic coastlines are home to one of the most lethal marine creatures on the planet—the box jellyfish. At this time of year, they are fully grown and pose a significant threat to those who venture into the waters outside the safety of netted areas.

The term ‘complacent’ has been used to describe beachgoers who underestimate the dangers lurking beneath the waves. Lifeguards in Far North Queensland have observed a worrying trend of individuals swimming beyond the protective nets, a decision that could have fatal consequences.

‘We are coming up to the time of year when lifeguards unfortunately start to see people becoming complacent and swimming outside the netted areas. On a calm day, box jellyfish can be found right along the water’s edge, feeding on shrimp and bait fish. Do not risk your life,’ they warned.

A video shared by Far North Queensland Lifeguards on social media showed a bucket of ocean water teeming with juvenile shrimp and krill, illustrating the perfect feeding grounds for box jellyfish. These conditions make the shoreline a hotspot for these venomous creatures, especially on calm days when they can be found at the water’s edge.

Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin, director of the Australian Marine Stinger Advisory Services and a renowned jellyfish expert, said the box jellyfish has ‘absolutely earned’ its reputation as the world’s most venomous animal.

These creatures are typically found in tropical coastal waters along Australia’s northern coastline, from Western Australia to Queensland. In Queensland, they remain active until late May, when cooler waters signal the end of their season.

Despite a reported decline in box jellyfish numbers around Cairns, attributed to the aftermath of 2023’s Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper, these dangerous animals are still being encountered further south.

In a startling example, lifesavers at Eimeo Beach in Mackay caught eight box jellyfish in a single routine check in January.

The threat is not to be taken lightly. According to Australian Geographic, box jellyfish stings have resulted in at least 70 known fatalities in Australian waters since the 1880s.

Far North Queensland Lifeguards have highlighted the recent tragic deaths of two young individuals in the state due to box jellyfish stings.

Equipped with about 60 venomous tentacles that can stretch up to three meters, the box jellyfish’s sting is not only excruciating—often compared to an electrocution or hot oil being poured on the skin—but can also be deadly.

Dr Gershwin advised that vinegar is a crucial first aid measure, as it neutralises the stinging cells and prevents further venom from being injected into the skin.

However, she cautioned: ’If you’re over the lethal sting threshold, it isn’t going to do anything. But the thing is, you’re not going to know at the moment, so you need to flood the area with vinegar and seek medical assistance as quickly as possible.’
