Most popular spot for Aussie tourists

The number of Australians visiting Japan has increased by a phenomenal 170 per cent over the last five years, according to passenger data from Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).

Skyscanner Australia data reveals that Japan is the fastest growing destination for Australian tourists in the last year.

“Sustained promotion by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is one of the key drivers behind phenomenal growth in Australians travelling to Japan. Japan’s strength and appeal as a travel destination lies in our difference – we can offer experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, like eating yakitori in a lane-way bar and chatting with locals, soaking in a natural hot-spring with a view of Mt Fuji or even hiking along an ancient trail and visiting beautifully preserved post towns,” said Kana Wakabayashi, executive director, Japan National Tourism Organisation Sydney.

And while flights to Japan may be quite affordable, the country has a reputation for being a little on the pricey side.

A microsite called ‘Experience Japan’ aims to change that perception. Featuring city guides, money saving tricks, the best airports to fly to and tips to find Japan’s best hidden gems, Experience Japan allows Aussies the chance to experience the best of Japan in the best and cheapest way possible.

“Japan has become a standout destination for Australian holiday-makers and our new micro-site will help showcase how astonishing and accessible the destination can be. Japan boasts some incredible sights and, with this obvious demand for flights, we wanted to offer Aussies the best possible tips, travel suggestions and opportunities to save some dollars,” said Michael Grierson, travel expert, Skyscanner Australia.

December and January are the most popular times for Australians to fly to Japan, as this is typically when they’ll find the cheapest flights. These airfares can be even cheaper when flying to alternative airports, says Skyscanner.

“A flight from Sydney to Osaka offers an estimated saving of $97 on arrival into Tokyo, and the same flight departing from Brisbane could save holiday-makers an incredible $319. Findings point toward additional searches or research into arrival cities will help Australians reduce overall holiday cost.”

Tokyo is the most preferred city to visit, being the ninth most visited city in the world, but “travellers are encouraged to look elsewhere to experience countless other Japanese delights”, says Skyscanner.

“Modern port city Osaka offers an alternative nightlife and busy restaurant scene; Okinawa, an island famous for its warm climate and pristine beaches; Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan that offers Aussies an off-the-beaten track experience.”
