The director of Russia’s top budget airline narrowly escaped being sacked last month after a flight carrying 102 passengers veered off course and performed a series of irregular manoeuvres that drew a phallic-like image on the flight radar.
The commercial flight was travelling from Moscow to Yekaterinburg on 11 November when the incident took place.
The board of Pobeda, Aeroflot’s low-cost airline, formally reprimanded General Director Andrey Kalmykov and sacked one of its deputy heads. Aeroflot, Pobeda and Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) declined to comment on the incident. However, the Rosaviatsia noted that the flight’s ‘unruly behaviour’ could have posed a safety hazard.
Podeba reportedly told police that the Boeing 737-800 had no drainage system, and was forced to take the path to drain fuel. However, The Moscow Times has suggested that the risky manoeuvre was made in support of Artyom Dzyuba, the Russian national soccer team captain, who was embroiled in an intimate video leaked just days prior.
