Surprising new travel trend

Little doubt life has changed since COVID-19. And while it may not surprise you that travel choices have also changed – duh – it seems this emerging travel trend took the conductors of this survey by surprise.

According to a YouGov survey commissioned by Toyota Australia, COVID-19 hasn’t scared Aussies from travelling, it has made many of them more adventurous.

Almost eight out of 10 (79 per cent) respondents are looking for thrill-seeking local adventures for their getaways to overcome the pressures and stress caused by the COVID-19. Around a third (29 per cent) are into exciting adventures such as rock climbing, off-roading and camping over leisure breaks.

After months of movement restrictions and lockdown, two-thirds of thrill-seeking travellers sought adventures to act as an escape mechanism during the pandemic.

Couples with no kids (85 per cent) and families (81 per cent) were the groups most wanting to live on the edge.

A third (34 per cent) of respondents are looking to improve their wellbeing, three in 10 (28 per cent) want to support hard hit local communities and regional towns; and 27 per cent want to check out previously undiscovered nearby destinations.

To sate their travel desires during restrictions, 13 per cent have been getting outdoors hiking and biking and partaking in other outdoor activities, while 8 per cent sought relaxation and rejuvenation days, and 7 per cent went on local food and wine trips.

“While 64 per cent of families and 62 per cent of millennials typically travelled overseas prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s great to see the nation embarking on adventure travel and road trips and exploring more of what their own state has to offer,” said John Pappas, chief marketing officer at Toyota Australia.

What type of travel do you now seek? What have you been doing to get your travel fix during COVID-19?
