There’s no doubt that taking quality travel photos is somewhat of an artform, but keeping track of what you take can be a challenge in itself. Here’s how to manage your photos, before, during and after your trip, so you can safeguard your precious memories.
Before you go
A few things that you can do before you leave that will make your life easier when you’re on the road:
- Make sure you have enough space on the devices you will be using to take photos.
- Ensure said devices are fully charged, along with any back up battery supplies.
- Pack connector cables to transfer or download images on the go.
- Take a USB or external hard drive for extra data storage.
- If you want to be really organised, create a holiday album with sub-folders for each of your destinations.
While you’re away
Review
One of the best things you can do is look through your images daily, or at least every few days. This is an excellent use of any downtime or while waiting around in transit. Delete any duplicates or inferior photos so you’re left with only the ones you really want to keep.
Share
Share any of your favourite images as you go. Whether it’s on social media, or to individuals through email or messages, it’s nice for loved ones back home to be able to follow your journey. Although, try to avoid ‘holiday spam’ (bombarding people with constant images) and just stick to the highlights.
Save
There’s nothing worse than losing all your holiday memories because device gets lost or broken. Avoid this by backing up your photos to another source every few days. Even if you just email yourself the crème de la crème each day, this at least ensures you won’t lose those precious moments.
When you return
Once the dust (or jetlag) has settled, transfer all your images over to your computer. Take the time to file images in a way that makes them easy to find later (such as the folder method suggested earlier). Save any photos for printing onto a USB or create an album on Facebook for your friends and family to enjoy. Remember, not everyone is privileged enough to travel, so sharing your photos can be a nice way for others to see the world too!
