Indonesian government announces exciting ’10 new Balis’ project

The Indonesian government is seeking billions of dollars to put towards developing new tourism destinations, including ‘10 new Balis’.

Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has announced five new “super-priority tourism destinations” to help ease tourism load from Bali and create new areas of economic growth.

The government is seeking investment to develop Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur in Central Java, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara and Likupang in North Sulawesi, to supplement the success of Bali.

More than five million of the nearly 15 million people that visited Indonesia between January and November 2019 went to Bali. A fifth of those travellers were from Australia.

Indonesia – home to more than 18,000 islands – has seen an 11.5 per cent year-on-year increase in international tourists and so is planning to promote and develop 10 new destinations as part of the ‘10 New Balis’ project, which will include airport upgrades and improved access to destinations and amenities.
