Post-holiday health kick

One of the joys of travelling is the chance to break out of the daily grind and do things differently. However, while having a break from your routine may be good for the soul, it’s not necessarily great for your waistline.

So how can you get back on track as quickly as possible when you’re home? Here are five strategies you can try to say sayonara to those extra kilos that aren’t exactly welcomed souvenirs.

Choose your liquids wisely
Stick with water and herbal teas to flush out toxins and cleanse your system. Aim for eight glasses of water per day, either carry a water bottle around with you or keep refilling your glass as soon as it’s empty. Green tea is a great choice for the added bonus of antioxidants, but don’t forget that it does contain caffeine, so don’t overdo it. Avoid coffee and sugary soft drinks that will lead to you crashing and burning as well as draining your adrenalin. Same goes for alcohol.

Snack smart
There’s nothing wrong with snacking between main meals but just make sure you’re making healthy choices that are going to fuel your body. Fruit is always a great option, as are nuts – which are full of healthy fats and will fill you up. Another great choice is carrot or celery sticks with hummus.

Eat the rainbow
Steer clear of processed foods and sugar and opt for an abundance of vegetables and some protein instead. This will keep you satisfied while nourishing your body and keep cravings at bay. The fibre from fruit and vegetables is another great way to flush out your system, so to speak!

Exercise each day
No doubt you’re tired and the last thing you feel like doing is hitting the gym, but even a 20-minute walk around the block is better than nothing. Look at ways you can spend more time outdoors and sneak in exercise where you otherwise wouldn’t. Anything you do no matter how short or simple is better than nothing, and the calories that you burn will help to move that post-holiday weight.

Sleep it off
It sometimes feels counterintuitive, but sleep is crucial to your body functioning at its peak and plays a key role in weight loss. Getting enough sleep each night lets you body repair and look its best.

What do you do after a holiday to get back into a routine and counteract any unhealthy holiday habits?
