Qantas, which – along with all Australian domestic carriers – recently began weighing all carry-on bags, has surprised travellers by announcing increased weight limits for cabin baggage.

The decision is a reaction to complaints by passengers that a 7kg carry-on weight limit was too restrictive.

From Monday 25 March 2019, Qantas will allow travellers to fly on domestic Australian services with one carry-on item weighing up to 10kg, and a second piece weighing up to 4kg.

Until then, Qantas passengers could travel with two pieces of luggage up to 7kg each.

The total carry-on weight limit will still be capped at 14kg per passenger but will allow for a 43 per cent increase in weight allowed for the primary bag. The physical size limits of bags will remain the same.

“We know a lot of our customers enjoy the convenience of not having to check in luggage. Most customers on short trips and weekends away only travel with one carry-on bag plus a small personal item,” said a Qantas spokesperson.

“Focusing on the amount of baggage customers bring onboard helps flights to depart on time and allows everyone to have their fair share of space in the overhead compartments. Heavy bags or overhead baggage compartments that are too full can cause a safety risk for customers and crew.”

Cabin baggage allowance on domestic QantasLink Dash 8 turboprop services will not change and will remain at one piece weighing 7kg.

    A good and long overdue change.

    They did miss another thing "The physical size limits of bags will remain the same." - Why should these bag sizes be different on Domestic & International flights - it causes the unnecessary need to have different bags which is impractical when you are switching from an International to a Domestic flight and vice versa.

    Also, what about other airlines - you may want to have different airlines on different sectors, and once again there is a stupid inconsistency.

    IATA is a hopeless organisation who should be defining all these rules but do not.

    George, if you're travelling from a regional airport to overseas, book the entire flight on the one ticket. You are then afforded the maximum luggage limits of the longest leg for the entire trip.

    Eg if you're going ABX (Albury) - SYD - SIN - LHR on BA, the luggage limit of the SIN - LHR route is the maximum of the entire trip. If, for example, you're going SYD - LHR in Business Class, your luggage limit will be 2 x 32kg checked luggage with a maximum of 1 carry-on bag (for example), and a handbag/laptop in your cabin luggage. This is because the longest journey is SIN - LHR and it has the limits given.

    If you want to go different airlines on different sectors, then the limit on the longest sector is still the limit of your entire journey. There are some web-based sellers who will tell you you have a different luggage limit on one route of the journey, but if you book through the airline's website they'll be able to give you the correct limit for your booked journey. It's the wholesaler who changes the luggage limits on the web, not the airline.

    More unfair is the weight of passengers. I recently flew on a flight sitting next to a guy easily around 160kgs. He sat in middle, totally taking over both arm rests, and every time he moved, his elbows smashed in to me.
    Yet I am restricted to carrying 7kgs on a plane, with my 68kg frame. Many airlines weigh cargo and lugage pallets. Put a few of these well built guys on a plane, and how on earth can they work out the correct flying weights?

    The oversized people really bug me on flights. I have been squished up against the window and unable to move (at all) by 2 fatties - one in the middle the other on the aisle. Flight staff couldn't care less. They always used to weigh passengers before you could board a flight - I remember it well. There are some airlines who do this now, but usually in countries where being oversized is a national problem.

    Sorry, the size of bags is never checked. There is a pipe frame next to each boarding gate which is used as a footrest for the aircrew but it is supposed to be the measure of onboard luggage. All onboard luggage is supposed to fit withing the frame. We followed a backpacker on one of our flights and she had her back pack which took up three spaces in the overhead locker and would certainly have been overweight. A lot of the wheeled cases used as onboard luggage are larger than the authorised size but nobody seems to care.

    Upping the limit is well and good, but please dont expect the Flight attendants to lift these extra loads into the overhead lockers, if you can and should , please do it yourselves, their are exceptions but most passengers are able.

    Sorry I don't agree with it, I travel extensively and find that some passengers with their luggage take up spaces of other passengers. I have had my bag placed at one end of the plane and I am at the other because of this. If they can take two bags each then two passengers with carry on would take up the whole space, leaving nowhere for the bags of other travelers. With the extra weight if you cannot lift it yourself then don't expect a flight attendant to do it for you.

    I suggest that carry-on luggage should be avoided, even banned. Okay with computer and camera bags and personal hand luggage (ie ladies handbags and coats) but baggage that could be checked-in should,in my opinion, be prohibited. Some people get on board with small suitcases which clearly exceed both size and weight limits. If you are too precious to wait for checked-in baggage at your destination then take a train or bus. Looking with my engineers eye at the overhead lockers I would query the air-worthiness of have literally tonnes of baggage inside the passenger cabin in the case of emergency.

    Understand you Eddy - but then I travel light and like my 7kg limit and can stick to it. Not all that easy to follow your idea to take the train or bus when I frequently go to Perth or Adelaide. I have been to Perth on the train twice - have you?

    Actually Cowboy I was a member of the ADF for 26 years from 1962, and, being from WA, did the East coast to west coast train at least 12 times, starting long before the Indian Pacific. In what my grandchildren call the 'olden days', the trip from Perth to Sydney took 5 nights and 4 days, We had to change trains at Kalgoorlie, Port Pirie, Adelaide. Melbourne and Albury. I know that journey well. My last trip on the Indian-Pacific was in 1980. I still love train travel, my last long distance train trip was from Vancouver to Toronto.

    Thanks Eddy, do like train travel as well, I remember the old train from Perth to Sydney you described and that trip was much more interesting than today's Indian Pacific, took the first trip in 1970 and all the carriages were brand new. Longest trip I did was from Peking to Zurich with 2 stops of a week's duration in Moscow and Prague in 2006.

    I agree with many of your comments re oversized carry ons, but especially I get annoyed when people rush to board the plane and put their carry ons in the first overhead they come to, and then sit down the back of the plane. When I get to my seat, often the overhead is full. As we are given a ticket with a seat number on it, so the overhead locker should apply to that row of seats only. But I dont know how they would police this.

    There are too many inconsiderate people these days . I travel a lot and carry scales and stick to 7kg. So now....we’ll see people turn 10 +4 into about 13 + 6 and where do you fit it. I’d rather it be 8 or 9 combined and weighed at the gate. If they are over , get the credit card out and pay excess baggage, and have it stowed away. It’s getting ridiculous, I’ve seen people opening their cases and putting on clothes to comply with weights.
    Air travel......it’s like catching the bus nowadays.
