“Shocking and disturbing” report

While Uber may enjoy a reputation for undercutting cab fares, it seems its drivers are facing ‘cuts’ of their own, with many reporting being assaulted and some held at knifepoint, according to a new survey of ride-sharing operators.

A survey conducted by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and the Rideshare Drivers’ Co-operative, polled over 1100 drivers from Uber and other ride-sharing companies, revealing widespread reports of harassment and violence.

Nearly four in 10 drivers reported receiving threat, with 10 per cent saying they were assaulted and six per cent saying they were sexually assaulted. On the flipside, there were 969 claims of misconduct by passengers.

Drivers said they regularly dealt with behaviour involving “death threats towards them and their families, rape threats, sexual assault, being punched in the face, held at knifepoint, had their car windows broken, their cars stolen and have received racial abuse”.

Almost 30 per cent were racially slurred, one in five suffered sexual comments and 40 per cent had their property damaged.

Drivers also reported being immediately deactivated after passengers made “entirely false” reports of misconduct, which almost two in three drivers said they have received.

All this mistreatment for a measly $16 per hour after fees and taxes but before fuel, insurance, maintenance and other costs.

The findings have been called “shocking and disturbing”, with TWU’s Tony Sheldon saying: “They are offered no support when they face sexual or physical assault and must choose between taking time off work to recover or going back to work the next day in order to get paid.”

The survey took place between July and October, with respondents from Uber, Ola, Taxify, DiDi and other ride-share companies.
