After years of travel and hundreds of hotels, I can safely say that I would take a three-star boutique hotel over a Crowne Plaza any day. Far from anything wrong with a five-star hotel, once you’ve stayed in one chain hotel, you’ve pretty much seen them all. Unlike chains, largely designed to offer guests the same experience they would find in their home city all around the world (somewhat defeating the point of travel), it’s the uniqueness of boutique hotels that makes them so memorable.
And when it comes to boutique, no one knows the sector better than luxury travel experts Mr and Mrs Smith who have just announced their picks of the best in world for 2018. Now in their fifth year, the awards cover 12 categories with winners chosen by an expert panel of judges featuring designers, writers, chefs and, more importantly, their one million strong travel-savvy readers.
And while the 12 winning hotels may not be the most affordable places to stay at, part of the fun of travel awards is the wanderlust you’ll experience from the comfort of your armchair.
