Tops in regional food tourism

In the central west of New South Wales, a mere 3.5-hour drive or one-hour flight from Sydney lies one of Australia’s leading regional food tourism destinations.

At an elevation of 600 to 1000 metres, it is also the highest wine-growing region in Australia and is fast becoming one of the country’s premier cool climate wine regions, particularly for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz varieties.

This region also boasts 38 vineyards, over 50 cafes and several fine-dining establishments.

Have you guessed where it is yet?

It’s Orange.

Orange is home to Australia’s longest-running regional food festival, Orange F.O.O.D Week and is celebrating its 28th year with a focus on provenance and sustainability.

The ten-day festival includes over 90 fabulous events, showcasing more than 40 cellar doors, restaurants and farm gates during the region’s autumn harvest and vintage, continuing its tradition as one Australia’s most loved food and wine festivals.

“We are thrilled that in our 28th year, Orange F.O.O.D Week continues to go from strength to strength, and that the quality and popularity of our signature events continues to grow,” says President of Orange F.O.O.D Week, James Sweetapple.

“We are excited to announce that this year’s Chef for our signature Autumn Grazing Dinner is one of our region’s own, Richard Learmonth of Sister’s Rock restaurant. We encourage everyone to support the region by participating in events across the entire festival period and which showcase the region’s food and wine, food producers, wineries, restaurants, chefs, caterers and cooks.”

Signature events of the 2019 F.O.O.D Week program include:

  • the Autumn Grazing Dinner
  • F.O.O.D Train
  • F.O.O.D Week Night Markets
  • F.O.O.D HQ, the heart of the F.O.O.D Week festivities, with special ‘Meet the Producers’ and ‘Taste Local on the Lawn’ events.
