Qantas’ bold new chapter: A glimpse at what’s coming in 2027

For many of us over 50, flying with Qantas has become as familiar as a well-worn pair of slippers. We’ve come to recognise the iconic navy, red, and fuchsia uniforms of the cabin crew as a symbol of Australian skies. But as we all know, change is the only constant, and Qantas is embracing this adage with a bold move to refresh its image for the first time in over a decade.

The Australian national carrier has announced that it’s time to retire the current uniforms and introduce a new design that will take to the skies in 2027. This significant change comes as part of a series of transformations the airline is undergoing, including the ambitious ‘Project Sunrise’.

The current uniform, which has been a staple since 2013, was designed by Martin Grant and has been worn with pride by Qantas staff. However, as Qantas Chief Executive Vanessa Hudson points out, the airline is not just changing its look but is also preparing for a future that includes an expanding international and domestic network, a historic fleet renewal program, and the advent of ultra-long-haul flights.

Involving over 17,500 employees in the redesign process reflects the inclusive culture at Qantas. The airline is committed to ensuring that the new uniforms not only represent the brand but also resonate with the people who wear them daily. This collaborative approach is a smart move, as it fosters a sense of ownership and pride among staff, which in turn enhances the customer experience.

The search for a new uniform designer is a nod to Australian talent, with the airline throwing the opportunity to local designers. This decision continues Qantas’ tradition of partnering with high-profile designers, such as Peter Morrissey, Yves Saint Laurent, George Gross, Harry Who, and Emilio Pucci, to create its iconic looks.

As we await the unveiling of the new uniforms, it’s worth noting that this makeover coincides with the launch of ‘Project Sunrise’. This ambitious initiative will see Qantas operate non-stop flights from Sydney to London and New York using the newly ordered Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. These ultra-long-haul flights are set to revolutionise travel by significantly reducing point-to-point travel time.

For seasoned travellers, the prospect of a direct flight to far-flung destinations without the need for stopovers is an exciting one. It promises convenience, comfort, and a time-saving journey that aligns with the fast-paced world we live in.

As Qantas prepares to enter this new chapter, it’s clear that the airline is not just changing its wardrobe; it’s redefining the travel experience. The new uniforms will be more than just clothes; they will symbolise a new era for Qantas and its passengers.

Are you excited to see what the new Qantas uniforms will look like? Do you have fond memories of the current design? And what are your thoughts on the upcoming ‘Project Sunrise’? Share your stories and opinions in the comments below, and let’s discuss what these changes mean for the future of air travel.
