This couple found a camping paradise with a ‘private beach’—discover how you can too

Hitting the road in a caravan or camper is the perfect way to enjoy retirement or escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

However, finding that idyllic, secluded spot to set up camp can often feel like a quest for a needle in a haystack, with popular sites quickly becoming crowded and losing their charm.

But what if we told you there’s a hidden gem out there—a camping paradise with a private beach?

This is not a myth; it’s a reality discovered by a travelling couple, Sam Sterckx and Wim Barzeele, who stumbled upon a secret campground that offers just that—a single campsite with exclusive access to a serene beach.

The couple, also the adventurous spirits behind the travel blog Bush and Bay, shared their enchanting find with the world. Nestled on the shores of Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Wheaton’s Beach is a secluded haven that promises tranquillity and a personal connection with nature.

‘There’s only one campsite at Wheaton’s Beach, and it has direct access to this little shallow lagoon, which is just magical on a high tide,’ they shared.

The couple spent three weeks exploring every nook and cranny of Kangaroo Island before they found this one-of-a-kind campsite at D’Estrees Bay.

‘Nearby, you can go snorkelling, fishing and surfing. There are hardly any people or visitors around, so you’ll most likely have the entire beach for yourself during your stay.’

However, this secluded spot has a caveat — it is unsuitable for all camping setups. The couple warns that the site is not caravan-friendly due to its small size and the narrow access path.

They managed with their 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) Patriot camper trailer, but advised against bringing a caravan or large camper trailer to this spot.

Instead, it’s perfect for those with a tent, campervan, or a small camper trailer who are up for a bit of a challenge.

Travelling with larger rigs? Fear not—Kangaroo Island has much to offer. The couple recommended Tea Trees Campground in D’Estrees Bay, which has ample space for caravans and larger setups.

It’s still within walking distance to Wheaton’s Beach, ensuring you don’t miss out on the area’s beauty.
