Devonshire tea at Fairfield Boathouse

Are there three things which go together better than scones, jam and cream? Not in my culinary experiences. A Devonshire cream tea is just about my favourite thing to eat and when you can enjoy one by the river, life is just about perfect.

Fairfield Park Boathouse & Tea Gardens, north of Melbourne’s CBD, offers the chance to relax by the river on a warm sunny day, or cosy next to the log fire on those notoriously cold Victorian winters. Here, I have spent many a happy Sunday afternoon nibbling on a scone with jam and cream and I’m reliably informed that the breakfasts are pretty delicious too.

You can make the afternoon a real treat with a glass of sparkling wine, or if you’re there during summer time, be sure to catch one of the free performances from the amphitheatre. And don’t forget, if you’re a little more energetic than me, you can even take a boat out on the river.
