I simply love tapas, all those colourful, tasty little dishes which you can share with friends, over a glass of wine is just too much fun. Paella is much the same, simply grab a plate and dig in.
Brandy Creek Winery is located about an hour and a half’s drive from Melbourne, just north of Warragul in Gippsland. Set amongst the hills between Warragul and Drouin, Brandy Creek is a lovely spot to enjoy an afternoon or evening dining on the alfresco verandah, looking out over the valley and is famed for its Paella Feast.
A whole afternoon of eating drinking and relaxing, with the spectacle of watching the five giant paellas being produced, through to having the owner Marie sign the recipe book I purchased providing information was great entertainment.
As soon as we walked in the door, the smell and sight of the giant paellas cooking had us salivating in anticipation. Once seated at the table amongst the scented roses in the alfresco area, the meal commenced with a selection of tapas – the mushrooms (Setas al ajillo con romero) were delicious. We tried all five of the paellas, each as mouth-watering as the next. Choosing a favourite was difficult as each of the paellas was so tasty, but the Paella Manchega made from beef, mushroom and quail egg was incredible. The meal was finished off with an expresso and a choice of three Spanish desserts. Naturally we shared our desserts as to choose just one was easier said than done!
At $68 per person, this is definitely something for a special occasion, but you do get value for money. The meal includes a selection of Tapas, as much of each of the five magnificent Paellas you can eat, a glass of wine, beer or spirits, the choice of three Spanish inspired desserts and Espresso coffee or tea. Definitely worth the drive to Gippsland to experience a stupendous Spanish feast.
