With your own private cottage, complimentary wine and a roaring open fire, a short break in the Acheron Valley may be just what you need.
When we set off for Stonelea Estate in Alexandra, about 40 minutes from the Yarra Valley in Victoria, I was prepared for a dreary weekend cooped up by the fire. But when we arrived at our private cottage by the lake, I found that even the rain couldn’t dampen my spirits. Standing on our little veranda, I could look right across the trout-filled lakes to the hills of theAcheronValley. And with a bit of exploration, I soon discovered that the private 18-hole golf course in front of me made up only a fraction of the 1500 acre property.
When we arrived back at our cottage after a quick stroll, we found that everything was as described. Our heater was already warming the room and the promise of a potbelly stove and complimentary red wine later in the evening was looking very welcome indeed. The rooms were neat and clean with tea and coffee facilities but without television. We booked a table for dinner in the main homestead which didn’t disappoint in price or taste. We were seated near a large open fire and enjoyed a delicious supper of smoke trout tureen and roast duck which came in at under $60, including a few glasses of wine to wash it down. A couple of games of billiards, and we were ready to retire to our cottage.
In the warmer months, Stonelea Estate is a hive of activity. Bikes are available for hire and people are fishing, golfing, playing tennis or horse riding. The Acheron Valley, High Country and surrounds are filled with beautiful wineries and sights to see. You can easily disappear for a day’s drive without wanting for entertainment.
And what’s more, the accommodation is affordable.
Cost: One night’s accommodation in a private cottage will set you back $109 per couple, twin share.
