Last week I had the pleasure of staying at 1888 Hotel
Last week I had the pleasure of staying at 1888 Hotel, one of the newest hotels yet, paradoxically, in one of the oldest buildings in Sydney. It’s situated in quiet Murray Street in Pyrmont, just a five-minute stroll from Darling Harbour. Formerly a warehouse for storing wool, 1888 Hotel has been renovated with a restrained, yet funky design eye. My room delights with its rough brick walls, lime green armchairs and snack size popcorn.
The staff is friendly, both at check-in and behind the bar. The downstairs lobby and café is spacious with loads of light flooding the open bar/restaurant, the glass lifts and the high-ceilinged landings, banishing any possible inner city gloom.
The rack rates for 1888 Hotel make it a medium-priced accommodation alternative ($259), but when I check it out for a Monday night, it’s just $208. Given its great location and easy ambience, it’s perfect for an extended Sunday night stay – check in at 8am (drop your bags), enjoy local activities before heading back at the official check in time of 2pm to enjoy the oh-so-relaxing deep tub and luxurious toiletries.
You may wish to try the tapas in the bar for dinner – I found them more than affordable and quite delicious. And my coffee at breakfast is barista-d just the way this fussy Melburnian likes it.
1888 Hotel is a four-star hotel but, through careful booking, you can claim this uber cool property for a very affordable outlay – and the free wifi just makes it better.
