Is getting a refund on travel paid for by credit card still an option? According to the Commonwealth Bank, the government says they cannot reverse transactions for travel (in other words, enter a dispute against a service provider for failing to deliver the paid-for service) during the current crisis. I was investigating whether I could cancel a trip to Japan and South Korea instead of accepting a credit against the company, less a $199 per person ‘rescheduling fee’.

A. I am not aware of any government direction instructing banks to no longer allow chargebacks for travel.

Banks are certainly encouraging customers to try to reach agreement with travel providers before proceeding to this step, as they will only offer a chargeback if they feel the provider is unreasonably withholding your money.

There are time limits on chargebacks, however. If you are asking for a chargeback for ‘services not provided’, which is an acceptable request, under the Visa card scheme rules, you have 120 days from the transaction processing date until your chargeback rights expire.

Different banks also have different terms and conditions, with some setting a much shorter time frame, such as 30 days after the date of the statement on which the transaction is recorded.

If you do plan on claiming a chargeback with you bank, it is important to keep a record of all your payments and correspondence with your travel providers.

    Variations in refund policy are astonishing. I was on a committee organising a large country event which had to be cancelled because of COVID-19. A caravan park hosting most of the attendees refunded some in full, deducted a small fee in some cases and a large fee in others. There was no logic in their application of their differing decisions on amounts refunded. Protests by potential customers didn’t help change the situation. Even enlisting ACCC and state consumer affairs did nothing to level the playing field.

    I was in India when they started closing Provincial borders. I had 12 hours to leave Rajahstan, managed to get a flight that afternoon to Delhi and Bangkok the next day. I had tickets across northern India to Kolkata and then to Bangkok.
    I was unable to use these tickets and the airline gave me me a choice – a credit note for the full value (valid for 12 months) or take a cash refund of about 50%. I took the later as I had no idea whether I would be able to return to India within the next 12 months. The money was promptly paid. I don’t regret the decision I made.

    Mid March I cancelled and received refunds 2 days and 3 days later for Travel Insurance, Car Rental (US) and Airbnb in LA. Qantas on the other hand, still waiting, and waiting, and waiting……

    It’s a question you wish you didn’t have to ask, but it’s a necessary one if you’ve been scammed. I’ve seen my fair share of internet scams over the years, so I know how it feels. The good news is, I also know some practical ways you can go about getting your money back from the scammers.
