For the majority of Australians, London’s Heathrow Airport is the most popular entry point into Europe, but there are alternative launching points which may save you time and money. With many other airports servicing increasing numbers of international flights within Europe, what are the best alternatives?
Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt is an exceptionally good gateway airport to Eastern Europe. With around 56 million passengers transiting through the airport last year, it’s the third busiest airport in Europe.
Zurich, Switzerland
The Swiss are world famous for being well organised and the main airport is no exception. With efficient connections and its central location to Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Eastern Europe, Zurich offers lots of well-priced flight options and competitive airport fees.
Paris, France
With easy access to London, it is often cheaper to fly directly to Paris before catching a connecting flight. Of course, Paris itself is a fantastic destination for a short stopover before continuing on to your final destination in Europe.
Manchester, United Kingdom
Manchester is a fantastic, albeit underrated, destination especially for soccer and cricket fans – being home to Old Trafford. The airport is a breeze to get through with easy access to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, Liverpool, North Wales and Scotland.
Dublin, Eire
A trip to Europe really isn’t complete without a stay in Ireland. The most cost-effective way is to tag a trip to Dublin on at the end of your stay, as there is no departure tax on flights. Etihad have flights from Dublin to Australia, connecting in Abu Dhabi and many of the major airlines also offer routes from the country’s capital.
