Finding free activities on holiday

There’s no way around it. Travel can be expensive. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of planning a trip and wanting to experience everything your destination has to offer. Once you’ve booked your flights and accommodation, it’s time to start thinking about what you are going to do once you get there.

Unfortunately, many of us don’t have the luxury (or the bank account) to be able to treat ourselves to every tour and experience. However, you can stretch your budget and make your money go further with some careful planning and a little research to find free activities at your holiday destination.

Go online
The internet has a treasure trove of destination information. To begin, search for the local Visitor Information Centre or Tourism Office. There will be information about the place you are visiting, with tours, activities and festivals – not all free but a great place to start. The website www.TimeOut.com includes free activities for many cities around the world. Local newspapers will have a What’s On section on their websites listing free activities and gig guides.

Find a walking tour
Many cities offer free walking tours! They are run on a tipping service, meaning you can go free, or you can just tip whatever you can afford. I’m Free Tours run in Sydney and Melbourne, while Sandeman’s run tours across many European cities.

Ask around
Tell your friends and family where you are planning on visiting. They may have already visited themselves and be able to give you some tips on free or low cost activities. Once you arrive at your destination, talk to people! Ask the receptionist at your accommodation, chat to the waitress at breakfast, grill the staff at the Tourist Centre. People are usually happy to share their advice.

Head out into nature
Go to the beach for a swim, put on your walking shoes and find a park or a walking track and enjoy spending time outside.

Museums and galleries
Many museums, libraries and art galleries are open to the public. They offer free entry and feature some fantastic exhibitions and activities.

Enter competitions and social media deals
Use social media to your advantage by looking for competitions and free giveaways offered by local newspapers and radio stations.

Do you have any advice on how to find free activities when planning your holiday?
