University accommodation makes city breaks affordable

The next time you travel, why not try a university stay to keep costs lower?

Beautiful Keble College is one of many universitys where you can stay inexpensively

Holiday accommodation in and around Australia’s main cities can make a short-stay unaffordable. However, there is a way to stay in some countries’ ‘smartest’ buildings for much less than your average B&B.

Some of the most impressive university buildings you’ll ever clap eyes on are almost student-free over the term breaks, so the opportunity to stay on campus opens up to travellers looking for affordable accommodation. Imagine being able to stay in the same rooms as some of Australia’s brightest talent? While there’s no promise the super-smarts of students will rub off on you, you will get the chance to experience a little of what it’s like to enjoy the academic environment.

Within Australia, you can easily arrange accommodation at St John’s College within the University of Sydney, Yarra House in Melbourne and the University of Canberra Village, to name just a few.

And if you’re looking to head further afield, you can spend a night in the magnificent Keble College in Oxford, UK, or how about a few days at Lavel University in Quebec, Canada?

You can even make your travel budget go much further in Rome – no mean feat – by staying at Rome University residences.

Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that, even though the buildings may be pretty special or historic, the accommodation is likely to be basic – but clean.

Have you ever stayed in university accommodation as a non-student? Would you recommend the experience?

How much do they cost per night or week? There is no mention of that nowhere. It's as if money is no object. Ha ha

I remember staying in one of the Perth University's over 30 years ago, was a lot cheaper and there was no one else in the wing we stayed in. Worth checking out again.

I stayed in college accommodation in Adelaide some decades ago. One advantage (of many): this accommodation is often very well located (central city). Possible disadvantage (depending on your expectations): rooms are generally small and not ensuited (a bit like private rooms in youth hostels). For me, that was all part of the fun.

Stayed in Uni accommodation in Edinburgh in 2003 during festival time when accom at a premium. It was great, 5 single bedrooms + 2 bathrooms, kitchen/sitting area, suited us as a group of 5. Only draw back was the booking had to be made: in after noon Sunday, out before noon following Sunday, but we worked our travel arrangements around this. It was excellent, basic student style. Half cost of hotel we missed out on.

I stayed at Trinity in Dublin some years ago and loved the whole experience! In the centre of town and the National Library close by for access to the Book of Kells.

Still a bit cheaper, not a lot, depending on where you are.

Quite a few years ago a company I worked for wanted to hold a training course for a number of staff so they put us up in Uni accommodation which had the advantage of classrooms nearby for us to attend lectures, and the Uni did catering for a very reasonable amount.
