Virgin announces ‘pride flight’

Virgin is at it again, with another ‘world first’ that’s bound to set trends for the aviation and travel industry.

Virgin Atlantic has announced a ‘pride flight’ staffed entirely by LGBT+ crew members to take off in June 2019 from London’s Heathrow Airport and fly to New York City to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

The Stonewall uprising, also known as the Stonewall riots, were a series of demonstrations by members of the LGBT+ community that are widely considered the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement.

Virgin has teamed up with modern-day gay icon Tituss Burgess, best known for playing Titus Andromedon on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, who will host passengers onboard the eight-hour flight. The pride flight will feature onboard DJ, drag bingo, speed dating and a Judy Garland singalong.

“The LGBT+ community has made enormous strides over the last 50 years, and I’m so proud to partner with Virgin Holidays and Virgin Atlantic to mark this occasion in style and celebrate the hard-won freedoms from those who came before us,” said Mr Burgess.

A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to a foundation that promotes LGBT+ initiatives.

“We’re not the type of company to mark an occasion like this half-heartedly: we’re going to be pulling out all the stops,” said executive vice-president of Virgin Atlantic Mark Anderson.

“We take our commitments to diversity and inclusion seriously, but you can rest assured we have a lot of fun along the way.

“This is going to be a show-stopping, ground-breaking, one-of-a-kind experience that we can’t wait to bring to the skies next June.”
