Virgin just revealed a game-changing secret for flyers—here’s what you need to know!

If you’re a frequent flyer or even just someone who enjoys the occasional getaway, you’ll know that in-flight dining can be a bit hit and miss.

Sometimes, you’re lucky enough to get a genuinely tasty meal, but more often than not, it’s a case of ‘eat it because you’re hungry, not because you love it.’

Virgin Australia aims to change all that with a significant refresh to its in-flight menu—one that’s set to delight both economy and business class travellers this winter.

A fresh take on in-flight dining

Virgin Australia has just unveiled a brand-new winter menu, and it’s clear they’re not just paying lip service to the idea of ‘improving the passenger experience.’

The airline has gone all out, introducing a range of new dishes that showcase Australian-sourced ingredients and global flavours.

Whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, you can now look forward to a meal that’s a cut above the usual fare.

What’s new for economy flyers?

Let’s start with the good news for those of us who usually fly economy. Virgin has added five new items to its economy class menu, and they’re a mix of comforting classics and tempting treats:

Savoury beef snack pie and classic sausage roll: Nothing says ‘Aussie comfort food’ quite like a piping hot pie and sausage roll. Now you can enjoy both at 30,000 feet!

Triple cheese and caramelised onion sandwich: For those who prefer a vegetarian option, this gooey, flavour-packed sandwich is sure to hit the spot.

Street Food Co. creamy spinach and ricotta tortellini: Craving something a little more continental? This Italian-inspired pasta dish is a welcome addition.

Archie Rose peach gin and soda: Yes, you read that right—now you can sip on a refreshing gin and soda from one of Australia’s most celebrated distilleries.

Chocamama party mix lolly bag: Because no journey is complete without a sweet treat, Virgin has added a bag of locally made lollies to the menu.

These new options are available on select flights, depending on the route, time of day, and flight duration. So, while you might not get to try them all at once, there’s a good chance your next Virgin flight will feature something new and delicious.

Business class gets a global upgrade

If you’re lucky enough to be flying business class, prepare your tastebuds for a real treat. From 28 May, Virgin’s business class menu will feature a rotating selection of dishes inspired by cuisines from around the world.

The airline’s culinary team has clearly put in the hard yards, with a menu that’s been rigorously taste-tested and designed to offer both variety and quality.

Here’s just a taste of what’s on offer:

Breakfast highlights:

  • Dragonfruit and coconut oat balls
  • Creamy scrambled eggs with chicken chipolata, potato Lyonnaise and hollandaise
  • French toast with summer fruit, mascarpone, and strawberry
  • Mango coconut chia pudding with apple and cranberry granola

Lunch and dinner delights:

  • Japanese-style soba noodles with grilled chicken
  • Three-bean Mexican quesadilla with sour cream and salsa
  • Indian-inspired chickpea masala with herbed jasmine rice
  • Chicken Parmigiana with mixed roast vegetables and sweet potato wedges
  • Pulled beef macaroni cheese with barbecue sauce
  • Cheese tortellini with sun-dried tomato pesto cream

Desserts to finish:

  • Eggless chocolate cake with icing sugar
  • Strawberry cheesecake
  • Sticky date cake

With such a diverse and mouth-watering selection, Virgin is clearly aiming to make the in-flight dining experience something to look forward to, rather than just something to endure.

Why the change?

According to Kyler Chong, General Manager at Virgin Australia, the menu refresh is all about delivering ‘remarkable experiences full of personality, value and choice.’ In his words: ‘At Virgin Australia, we believe flying should be as enjoyable as the destination, right down to what’s served on board.

Our new winter menu embodies our passion for bringing personality to the skies, featuring fresh, flavour-packed options designed to add value and delight at every bite.’

It’s a sentiment that’s likely to resonate with many travellers, especially those of us who remember the days when flying felt a bit more special.

The bigger picture: why in-flight food matters

For many Australians, especially those over 50, air travel is about more than just getting from A to B.

It’s about the experience—the anticipation of a holiday, the excitement of visiting family, or the comfort of a familiar routine.

Good food can make a big difference, especially on longer flights where a satisfying meal can help pass the time and lift your spirits.

It’s also worth noting that airlines are increasingly using their food and beverage offerings to differentiate themselves from the competition.

With more people travelling again post-pandemic, and with cost-of-living pressures making us all a bit more discerning about where we spend our money, little touches like a better meal or a locally made treat can go a long way.

Tips for making the most of your in-flight meal

Check your options: Menus can vary depending on your route and the time of day, so it’s worth checking ahead if you have dietary preferences or allergies.

Don’t be shy about asking: If you have specific needs, inform the airline beforehand. Most are happy to accommodate where possible.

Stay hydrated: Air travel can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water alongside your meal.

Enjoy the experience: Take a moment to savour your meal—after all, it’s not every day you get to dine above the clouds!
