I came out to Australia on a boat from Italy when I was eight years old and have never been back. Now that I have retired, this is something I plan on rectifying next year. It doesn’t really matter to me what time of year I go over there, so I was wondering what would be the cheapest time of year to travel? I am most interested in going to Bologna as that is where my family is from and where I have some relatives I have never met.
A. It will come as no surprise that the summer months are the most expensive, so you want to avoid taking your trip any time between June and early September.
The shoulder season (the time between high and low season) is either April to May or mid-September to October.
November, though, is generally the cheapest month to travel to Italy, but assuming that you plan to see some of the sites while you are there, it can be a little bit more of a hassle. While you will undoubtedly be offered lower rates, many of the attractions will limit their hours during the low season.
Bologna has an average high temperature of 24 degrees, which will be lovely, but it is also the city’s third wettest month with an average 68mm of rainfall.
If you want to get the cheapest tickets, it is usually best to book your flights one or two months in advance. There are fewer tourists at these times of year, so less demand for air tickets.
