50 years of oriental luxury

There are a handful of truly grand hotels in the world. I have been privileged to visit a few and Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental is one of my standout favourites. I stayed there for two nights last year and enjoyed every moment. The Mandarin Oriental’s 50th birthday celebration offers festivities for all to enjoy. Here are some of our favourites.

50 years of oriental luxury
This year 2013, sees the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong celebrating ‘50 Fantastic Years’ with year-long festivities to mark this milestone. Some of our favourites include:

Golden celebration stay package
Guests who stay before 31 December 2013 can enjoy luxurious accommodation, a bottle of champagne, US$50 spa credit and a special anniversary gift, with prices starting from HK$4399 (AU$609 at the time of writing) per night.

1963 dishes in the Krug Room
Chef Uwe Opocensky will be serving modern day adaptations of his 1963 dishes as part of the celebrations. These dishes will be incorporated into the Krug Room’s set menu until October 2013, and will be available afterwards by request. The Krug Room has also undergone a transformation to celebrate the 50-year anniversary. It has been redesigned to look like the inside of a train carriage, boasting views of the fast-moving kitchen.

Mimosa Champagne Seasonal Pedicure
Celebrate summer with a mimosa champagne cocktail or fresh orange juice as you enjoy a 75-minute vitamin C centric pedicure, including nail shaping and painting.

The Clipper Lounge
For those who enjoy a trip down memory lane, the Clipper Lounge will be showcasing an exhibition of classic photographs of the hotel, allowing guests to look back and recall the 60s and 70s. Guests staying at the hotel will also receive a special set of 10 postcards to take home.

Celebrity guests
Chef Pierre Gagnaire will be returning to his Michelin-star restaurant on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, between 12 and 19 October to offer a special menu of 1960s French dishes. Stay on between 21 and 26 October to meet Alessandro Palazzi, world-renowned martini expert, who will be creating a series of classic martinis at the Captain ‘s Bar.
