An afternoon with the Queen

Lend Lease retirement villages are filled with people from diverse backgrounds. At all of the Lend Lease villages you’ll find residents with incredible stories about interesting lives led in the past and continued passions today.

Ian Stuart from Highvale Village in Victoria is one of them.

For Ian, a career in cricket umpiring was not about awards or recognition, but about the experiences it gave him – on and off the pitch.

As an umpire for Sheffield Shield and International level matches for more than 20 years, Ian said it was a job that not only fulfilled his passion for cricket but also gave him some fantastic life experiences – including a chance meeting with the Queen!

“Umpiring gave me a lot of opportunities – it allowed me to see new things and meet interesting people and these experiences provided the true highlights of my career,” Ian said.

“During a trip to the United Kingdom and Europe in the 1990s, I had the opportunity to umpire a game at Windsor Castle and I was honoured to meet the Queen. It was only a brief encounter but it was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“I was also privileged to meet cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman on a couple of occasions.”

Ian and his wife moved to Highvale six years ago to downsize – a move he says was all about maintaining their independence but allowing them the choice to receive a helping hand with day-to-day household chores. It also meant he now has more time to watch the cricket!

Ian’s enthusiasm for the game hasn’t diminished since retiring from umpiring and he continues to volunteer as a guide at the MCG.
