Following the life of young midwife Nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Laine) in 1950s London, the series not only touches on the hardships women faced when giving birth during post war Britain, but also the trials of a country trying to put the past behind it and embrace a new sense of modernism. Working in the community under the tutelage of the sisters of Nonnatus House.

With a stellar cast of well-known faces in British drama, including Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne, Pam Ferris as Sister Evangelina and Stephen McGann as the recently-widowed Dr Patrick Turner, this screen adaptation of the memoirs Jennifer worth, is a true reflection of the life of a nurse in London’s East End.
