Coalition clashing over spilt milk

During the weekly meeting of Coalition MPs and senators yesterday, a heated discussion over cut-price milk turned sour when NSW Liberal senator and farmer Bill Heffernan called Victorian Liberal senator Scott Ryan a ‘*****wit’ according to sources from The Age.

The discussion descended even further when Victorian Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella chose to defend Senator Ryan by telling 68 year old Senator Heffernan ‘Why don’t you go and pop your Alzheimer’s pills.”

These comments could not have come at a worse time with Coalition Leader Tony Abbott opening the weekly conference by congratulating his team for its “exemplary discipline” while the Labor Party tore itself apart over the past week.

Should MPs and senators be expected to act with respect for their own colleagues?
Were the comments from both senators inappropriate?
