Daylight terrorist attack in London

A British soldier has been killed after two men ran him down in their car and savagely butchered him in broad daylight in front of onlookers. The attack occurred a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks in the suburb of Woolwich, located southeast of London.

According to onlookers, the man was struck down by a car, after which the two attackers got out and started to strike the man with a kitchen knife and a meat cleaver. They then dragged the man into the middle of the road where they made no attempt to flee the scene, waiting for police.

An onlooker who was filming the incident on a smartphone was approached by one of the men who had seen the camera. The attacker attempted to justify his actions by saying “The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day. This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth. We apologise that women had to see this today, but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don’t care about you.”

Police arrived on the scene a short time later. The two men threatened the police and, as a result, were shot and wounded. Both men were taken to hospital, one in a serious condition.

The new face of terror

Since the 9/11 attacks on New York, the ‘face of terror’ has been men with Arabic skin tone, dressed in a similar way to Osama Bin Laden, wearing headdresses and sporting thick beards.

The new face of terror emerged today when these two men murdered a British soldier in London. They were young, clean shaven, had very dark skin and spoke like locals. These men were intent on sending a statement and, unlike those involved in the Boston Bombings last month, didn’t try and flee the scene. This is a new style of terrorism, one we haven’t had to experience before.

While the motive is clear – one of the men was recorded saying “This British solder is an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth” – it is still unclear where the men originate from, only that the attack was in retaliation for “Muslims dying every day”.

The Islamic Society of Britain was quick to release a statement condemning the attacks. It stated that justifying this killing in the name of faith or religion is false and rejected.

Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of the victim.

Is this type of personal attack more worrying than that of a faceless bomber? Do you think Australia is at risk of similar attacks?
