Five best ‘forgotten’ lollies

For many of us, the lollies from our childhoods are symbols of happy times so today we take a look at some of our favourite sweets, long since gone from supermarket aisles.

Choo Choo Bars

With its chewy liquorice-flavoured toffee, Choo Choo Bars were a popular confectionery bar. The iconic blue wrapper depicting a steam train had the slogan ‘The Choo Choo Funtime Express’. They have been unavailable to buy individually for years, but if you’ve a hankering for the old days, they can be bought in bulk online.

Polly Waffles

Polly Waffle bars were wafer tubes, filled marshmallow and coated in chocolate. With sales plummeting and manufacturer Nestlé announced they were too labour-intensive and expensive to make, the beloved Polly Waffle was discontinued.

Spearmint Leaves

Allen’s announced last week that production of Spearmint Leaves, along with its Green Frogs, would halt. The news put a sour taste in the mouths of many Australians, who are already mourning the impending loss of these iconic sweets.

Chocolate Cigarettes

The demise of the Chocolate Cigarette came about when people realised that smoking and lung cancer wasn’t something of which to make light. White musk sticks called ‘Fags’ became substitutes, though the name has since been changed to Fads.

Bertie Beetles

These beetle-shaped chocolates were once available everywhere, but discontinued in 1970. Nowadays, they are only sold in show bags and available on special occasions.

Which of these lollies would you love to see returned to the shelves? What were your favourite lollies when you were growing up?
