Health rebate means test passes lower house

The health rebate means test legislation passed through the lower house yesterday with a 71-70 vote. This paves the way for an easy transition through the Senate.

The legislation, Fairer Private Health Insurance Incentives, will mean singles on $83,000 and families above $166,000 a year will only be eligible for a reduced rebate, typically $500 less a year to singles and $1000 less a year to families. The rebate will be cut altogether for singles on $129,000, and families on $258,000.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has promised the Coalition will scrap the means test ‘as soon as we can’.
