NASA has released thousands of never before seen photos from the Apollo missions.
Part of a project that has been running for 15 years, the images themselves aren’t new but have only just been shared en masse through the Project Apollo Archive Flickr account.
Maintained by space enthusiast Kipp Teague, the archive consists of more than 12,000 photos.
Speaking to The Planetary Society, Kipp said the process of archiving every photo taken of the moon by astronauts has been a long one, involving the originals being preserved and digital copies made in high resolution.
With images covering Apollo 7, the first manned test flight in 1968, all the way through to Apollo 17, the final mission in 1972, the stunning hi-res photos include shots taken by the astronauts themselves. With a total of 12 astronauts walking on the moon over the course of the Apollo missions, the recently released images offer a new view of the lunar landings with a more humanised aspect.
