Old school, new tricks

For those who enjoy the UK television series New Tricks, then the ABC’s Old School, with Bryan Brown and Sam Neil, will delight and entertain you.

Lennie Cahill (Bryan Brown) is released from prison and is looking for his share of the bank job for which he has served time. Hot on his tail is retired cop Ted McCabe (Sam Neil) who took a bullet in the same bank job and has made it his life’s work to find out who shot him.

With no money and no friends left, Cahill agrees to help McCabe find out who shot him, as long as he gets to keep the money he’s owed should they find it. As they navigate their way through a world of dead crims, bent cops and family dramas, the relationship between Cahill and McCabe, as strange as it may seem initially, develops and the two soon settle into a comfortable companionship.

Sam Neil and Bryan Brown may be the obvious stars of the show, but performances from Hanna Mangan-Lawrence as Cahill’s granddaughter Shannon and Sarah Pierse as McCabe’s long-suffering wife give this comedy-drama another dimension.

Old School airs on Fridays at 8.30pm on ABC, but if you’ve missed the first episode, why not catch up on iView
