Climate change: “we’re not winning the battle”

Font Size:

After Australians experienced searing temperatures last month, NASA has confirmed that February was, in fact, the hottest month since global warming records began.

NASA’s analysis was conducted using the average temperatures from the time when records began in 1880, to average temperatures between 1951 and 1980. The findings reveal that February was the hottest month on record in the world.

Australia’s chief scientist, Dr Alan Finkel says that this confirms the planet is fighting a losing battle against climate change.

According to Meteorologist Dr Jeff Masters, February 2016 was exceptional because it was, on average, 1.35 degrees Celsius hotter than the long-term average.

Most leading climate scientists agree that the world experiences natural variability in warming and cooling weather patterns over time. However, this does not account for the rising temperatures the world has experienced over the last 20 years.

Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Melbourne, David Karoly, said it’s not simply a matter of a more intense El Nino, because the El Nino of 1997-98 was stronger than 2016. Rather, he suggests, a greenhouse-induced climate change is likely to be responsible.

“It could be natural variability but in practice when we look at the long-term records we know that global warming, due to increasing greenhouse gases, has been causing long-term warming of about nine tenths of a degree over the last 100 years,” Professional Karoly said.

In Monday’s episode of Q&A, Dr Finkel, a highly-regarded neuroscientist, engineer and supporter of nuclear energy, said that there is “genuine reason for concern”.

“For all the effort we are putting into trying to avoid increases of emission, we are losing. What we are doing with solar, wind, changing practices, behavioural practices and things like that, we’re not winning the battle.”

There is NO climate change…… but the furphy has been a real money spinner for some folks

      Come on in flat earther.
Apparently your head in the ground is worth more than thousands of brilliant minds working on this. And of course who cares about statistics and 600,000 years of weather which has NEVER seen the extremes we are experiencing.

Your “NEVER” is wrong mick. It was hotter 5000 years ago during the Holocene Climate Optimum, a period of climate, warmer than we have now that lasted 4,000 years and no greenhouse gasses to blame it on.

And most periods in history when this has happened there have been trigger events. We have CO2. That IS triggering change. The flat earthers refuse to entertain that ‘she won’t be right’.

And the 300 year long medieval warm period where temperatures were warmer than today? CO2 during both of these periods was less than today yet the climate still warmed. There is many, many factors in play that affect climate and CO2 is probably a minor one. Your statement the CO2 IS triggering change is pure speculation. Rising CO2 during a period of warming does not mean one causes the other. Correlation is not evidence of causation and the point is your “NEVER”, as you typed it, is just wrong.

Naturally there is climate change, there has been for millions of years, BUT there is no evidence that the natural gas CO2 that is essential for life is having any effect.

In the past the levels of CO2 have been much higher than now.
Just check the website Carbon sense monitored by Viv Forbes.

Please study the CO2 graph on the link:

      Study done by NASA.

So what did not happen in the other 600,000 years the planet’s existence?

The issue is not that plants need CO2. The issue is the sheer volume released and the effect on the planet.

Please read a bit more SeniorCit.

It’s hard to believe, isn’t it, that there are people who still say that the planet is not warming. There are those who reluctantly agree but say that it is not being caused by man’s activity.
Basically, we are going to have to drastically reduce our emissions of “greenhouse” gases – principally carbon dioxide.

Yeah. Some are pursuing coal interests. Some are set in their ways. And other are plain ignorant and refuse to educate themselves so that they gain a bit of perspective about the issues.

Yes, it’s been warming for at least 300 years after the Little Ice Age.

      What else is new?

Globe has been steadily warming for 351years 0.26ºC/century since 1659!

Compelling Reading On global warming FRAUD: Taxing Air: Facts & Fallacies about climate change http://www.taxingair.com/

Taxing Air: reviews of the latest exposé of the great global warming FRAUD

      Scientist Matt Ridley:
… towards the end of the first decade of the 21st century it became clear that the Earth’s average temperature just was not consistently rising any more, however many “adjustments” were made to the thermometer records, let alone rising anything like as rapidly as all the models demanded.

So those who made their living from alarm, and by then there were lots, switched tactics and began to jump on any unusual weather event, whether it was a storm, a drought, a blizzard or a flood, and blame it on man-made carbon dioxide emissions….

The fact that people have short memories about weather events is what enables this game to be played…

So it is deeply refreshing to read the new book called Taxing Air: Facts and Fallacies About Climate Change by the internationally respected geologist Bob Carter and illustrated by the cartoonist John Spooner, which puts climate change exactly where it should be – in perspective. After demolishing many other arguments for carbon taxes and climate alarm, Carter runs through recent weather events, showing that there is nothing exceptional, let alone unprecedented, about recent droughts, floods, heat waves, cyclones or changes to the Great Barrier Reef.

How come then that last week the World Meteorological Organisation produced a breathless report claiming that “the decadal rate of increase (of world temperature) between 1991-2000 and 2001-2010 was unprecedented”? It took professor Ed Hawkins of Reading University a short time to point out that this was no longer true if you compared 1993-2002 and 2003-2012 – ie, if you took the most up-to-date records. In that case, the latest decade showed a smaller increase over the preceding decade than either of the preceding decades did. In other words, the temperature standstill of the past 16 years has begun to show up in the decade-by-decade data…

Carter is a courageous man, because within academia those who do not accept that climate change is dangerous are often bullied.

Indeed, Carter, who retired from James Cook University before he got interested in the global warming debate but remains an emeritus fellow, recently found himself deprived of even an email address by colleagues resentful of his failure to toe the line. As the old joke goes: what’s the opposite of diversity? University.

      Terry McCrann:
Bob Carter and John Spooner are … setting out in great detail a great stupidity: the great global warming consensus.

The absurdity of the consequence of that consensus is captured in their book title: Taxing Air. That’s the utter absurdity, in our local context, in many more ways than one, of former prime minister Julia Gillard’s carbon tax, and the artificial pricing of carbon dioxide more generally in parts of the world…

Carter, a distinguished marine geologist and environmental scientist; Spooner, The Age’s illustrator-cartoonist-commentator … called on a group of like-minded people, expert across not just the climate, such as former head of the National Climate Centre Bill Kininmonth, but economist Martin Feil, to calmly, analytically and totally dismantle the global warming stupidity…

They pick apart the dynamics of climate alarmism. How it began, what exactly is the IPCC, the truth about the Climategate emails, the big lie about “carbon pollution” instead of the truth about the carbon dioxide which is the basis for life on earth.

They talk about the Australian climate in the global context; and again the utter uselessness even if you are a total true believer, of reducing our CO2 emissions in the absence of global action.

      Jennifer Marohasy:
IT’S focused on Australia, popular misconceptions about the environment, history, climate and there is more, it’s chock full of cartoons! I’m referring to a new book by scientist Bob Carter and cartoonist John Spooner entitled Taxing Air: Facts & Fallacies about Climate Change.

Some of the big issues address:

Just 8,000 years ago, there was virtually no summer sea-ice in the Arctic Ocean.

Sea-level rise is natural, and declining in rate.

Australian rainfall has not decreased over the last 100 years.

A previous Australian drought lasted 69 years.

By catchment management, the Murray-Darling Basin now contains almost 3 times as much water as it held naturally.

Global air temperature has not increased for the last 16 years, despite an 8% increase in CO2.

Global ocean temperature is also steady or cooling slightly.

Australian territory absorbs up to 20 times the amount of CO2 that we emit.

The unmitigated gall of mankind, whose arrogance knows no bounds, to think that mankind changes the climate, causes oceans to rise, winds to leave their course. Over millennium nations have been buried in sands, cities lost, then to be discovered again:

Let me give you the weather report that I go by and it’s 1000’s of years old: ‘While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.’ Genesis 8:22, amen.

With two science degrees I ask those who think humans have caused our climate to change, to recognise some very inconvenient truths:

Meteorologist Robert White who died recently, 50 years ago developed the first weather models in the U.S. Since then so called climatologists have claimed that their analyses are based on “all of recorded history” without admitting that their data is no more than 120 years old.

Rocks and ice cores show that over millions of years, before mankind evolved, our planet has experienced higher and lower long term temperatures, and higher and lower long term atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations than the last 120 years.

Mankind has burnt more coal this century than in all time before 2000, yet the last 15 years has seen a plateauing of last century’s temperature rises .

Einstein summarised the scientific method – if data does not fit a model, the model needs correcting. Hence so many scientists, including the CSIRO, clamour for funding to improve their faulty weather models, hoping that they will develop a reliable climate model.

Our continuing long term climate temperature changes are caused by our changing proximity to the sun, hence ice ages, while the sun’s irregular outbursts of energy change our weather.

I have often seen that graph of plateauing temperature shown by Bolt on TV and I wonder how it could be possible when I also hear and have experienced some of our hottest summers over the last 10 years.
It is true that the world has experienced hotter periods but humans were not there then.
It is also true that our orbit round the sun does at times bring us closer to the sun and the sun does go through periods of greater activity. However, none of that has occurred during our recent period of warming.
Maybe we are not headed for some very uncomfortable hot weather but why take a chance if we can do something about it.
Also large areas of the northern hemisphere stand to gain by a warmer climate so why should they worry about Australia sweltering.

You need another science degree DStark, if indeed you have one relevant to this subject matter.

You are following the classical fossil fuel industry approach: denounce the science, claim it is all about “funding” and then claim she’ll be right as it always has been.

Statistics are more than 120 years old. NASA has CO2 samples from ice cores dating back 600,000 years. An inconvenient fact I suppose. For the 4th time on the blog today here is the link:

Read my post above if you need help deciphering the graph. It is pretty clear to anyone with a science degree.

50 years ago we still had most of the world’s forest cover left. Since then over 66% of the world’s forests have been killed.

That alone makes me think we may not have many generations left.

The resource wars have already begun.

The only way they have been able to keep this scam going is by adjusting downwards, all the old records. It is well documented the BOM & the CSIRO have been doing this, as have their compatriots around the world.

Anyone with more than enough math to make change from a bus ticket who bothered to do some research would know that the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere is absorbing all the radiation of the wave length that CO2 can absorb. Hell you don’t even have to do the math, just read the data.

No increase of CO2, no matter how large can increase the temperature more than a very minor amount.

Even the IPCC data shows this is a fact. It is there in black & white, but you will have to read through 1550 pages of bumph to find it The claim is that the current level will increase the water vapour in the air, & this water vapour will increase the temperature. Water vapour is a much stronger greenhouse gas than CO2. Without this bumph the whole pack of cards collapses. You do have to look a bit deeper than their ABC comments to find it, but it’s there.

Unfortunately for their claim, measurements of the atmosphere are showing that an increase of CO2 has led to a corresponding decrease in water vapour. There are over 200 recent scientific papers proving this.

Unfortunately very few of the literary types who become journalists have enough math to even understand what I’m talking about, particularly the left leaning types we find at the ABC.

Governments know this & are preparing to back away from the whole pile of garbage, hence the sacking of 350 useless global warming white coats at the CSIRO. Fear of losing greenie votes is all that’s keeping them quiet.

Don’t be conned folks, do a little digging, & you will see the scam for what it is.

Climate has a huge number of variables to it. Did you not know that??? With computing power increasing exponentially the models are getting better every year. Even doubters would remember how inaccurate local weather forecasts used to be. Now they are rarely wrong. For the same reason.

      dstark,
we can agree though, that the climate is changing? And that man can have a part in reducing this change? Or are we doomed? I’m hoping your scientific background can help me with these questions, regardless of how inconvenient they may be…

Climate change is a fact of Earth. Geology and ice cores tell us that. We might have exacerbated it with industrialisation, flatulent cattle and humans, but the fact is that trying to control climate change is farting against thunder.
