Older workers more stable

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) March 2010 Australian Social Trends report explores the effect of the Global Financial Crisis on the Australian labour market. By now, March/April 2010, we were tipped to have 8% unemployment, with older workers being the hardest hit. The ABS report shows once again how very wrong the pundits can get it. Unemployment is currently 6.1% and the most stable sector of the workforce is men and women aged over 55 – their numbers increased compared to a 5% decrease in employment for those aged 15-24.
