Angelina’s Diary of Surgery

Following on from her double mastectomy two years ago, Angelina Jolie elected to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed last week, so as to cut out her chance of developing cancer in those areas.

The actress and special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, lost her mother, her grandmother and her aunt to cancer. Jolie also found that she shared the same BRCA1 gene mutation, which gave her a 50 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer and an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. As a result, she underwent her second surgery two weeks ago, and has written a diary detailing the experience.

The piece written for The New York Times, is called Diary of a Surgery, and she hopes it will raise awareness of the issues that surround women who may be at risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer.
