Should dogs be allowed in stores?

There is no doubt we are a nation of dog lovers, but do we really need to take them everywhere? Is there anything to be gained by taking your hound to the hardware store?

In what Bunnings’ must have thought was a marketing masterstroke, the hardware giant announced last week that dogs would be welcome in all its stores. However, staff did have the right to refuse dogs they deemed unsuitable – how can you tell just by looking which dog is the unsavoury type?

My first thought was that it would give a new dimension to the ubiquitous sausage sizzle, but sadly, it seems the fallout is far more serious than a snaffled snag.

A five-year-old girl was bitten by a dog in a Bunnings’ Victorian store, resulting in broken skin, bruising and two bite marks just below her knee. The company has paid the girl’s medical bills.

Do you think dogs should be allowed in stores? Would dog-friendly stores make you more or less likely to shop there?
