The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, winner of the 2018 Experts’ Choice Award by TripExpert, is a museum commemorating toilets and their importance to civilisation. It comes third on the Time magazine’s 10 Weirdest Museums in the World list, behind the Icelandic Phallological Museum and The Museum of Bad Art in Massachusetts in the US.
Created by social activist and founder of the Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, it is situated in New Delhi, India. Learn about the entire evolution and history from the past 4,500 years. From simple chamber pots to elaborately decorated Victorian toilet seats, including a replica of the ‘Rumble Throne’ purportedly used by the French monarch, Louis XIV. The toilet is hidden inside a throne and according to legend, the French king held audiences while sitting on the toilet.
The museum is open every day, except on Indian National Holidays, from 10.30am to 5.00pm (1 November to 30 March) and 10.00am to 5.00pm (1 April to 30 October), and entry and parking are both free.
