It’s Easter soon, and the good news is that, aside from lots of chocolate and hot cross buns, there’s a four-day long weekend coming up, which is the perfect amount of time for a quick camping getaway. The bad news is that everyone wants to get away; so finding a place that’s not packed can be tricky.
We spent last Easter driving across the Nullarbor and with all that space, it was pretty easy to find a crowd-free spot to camp each night. But it doesn’t matter how you get there, the middle of the Nullarbor’s a long way from anywhere, so here are a few other suggestions on where you can beat the Easter crowds.
- Eyre Peninsula, SA: you won’t have the beach to yourself, but you won’t have to share it with a thousand others either. Try Coffin Bay or Lincoln national parks.
- Little Desert NP, Vic: even on the busiest weekends you can usually find a spot to pitch your tent beside the Wimmera River.
- Werrikimbe NP, NSW: explore World Heritage rainforest in the highland wilderness area around 100km west of Port Macquarie.
- Outback NSW: Easter’s a great time to head west, as days are getting cooler but nights are not yet freezing. Top spots to camp include Kinchega and Mutawintji national parks.
- Kakadu: most of the interstate travellers haven’t made it as far as the Top End yet, so there’s plenty of room to move in Kakadu, and while some of the 4WD tracks are still closed, most of the sealed roads are open.
