The superfood beating asthma

A new study of 642 people conducted by James Cook University found a correlation between eating oily fish twice a week and improved respiratory health.

Globally, asthma affects 330 million people and Australia has one of the highest rates in the world with instances of the condition doubling over the past 30 years.

Asthma is a condition in which a person has sensitive airways in their lungs. Triggers can cause their airways to narrow, making it difficult for them to breathe. There are three different ways in which a person’s airways can narrow.

  1. The inside lining of the airway becomes swollen and inflamed
  2. Extra mucus is produced
  3. Muscles around the airways squeeze tight

 

The study concluded that components in the fish fat helped to improve and restore lung function and that eating fish at least twice a week, over several months, could improve respiratory health in mild to moderate cases of asthma.

“They showed a very positive correlation between eating a lot of seafood and having very high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, with a much lower rate of asthma,” said Professor Lopata from James Cook University.
