Step 1: Plan
The planning stage of the spring-clean process is almost as important as the cleaning itself. Taking the time to map out your plan of attack will ensure that you get the work done efficiently. Writing lists is one of the best ways to get started.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Which rooms need cleaning? If you tend to tidy up regularly throughout the year, you might only need to work on select rooms.
- How much cleaning are you prepared to undertake? Does your spring clean mean one a thorough dusting and vacuum or a complete overhaul?
- Will you do the cleaning yourself or hire a professional? Consider the type of work and what you’re capable of doing versus the cost of hiring a cleaner.
- Which rooms need the most or least work? Wiping down windows and mopping the floors may be enough, but some rooms could require repainting walls and replacing curtains.
- How much time will you require? Decide roughly how many hours or days to set aside and whether you will need to recruit others to help.
Step 2: Prepare
Now that you’re aware of how much work needs to be done, it’s time to make a plan.
- Do you need to schedule appointments? If so, it’s best to give as much notice as possible. Always be sure to obtain and compare quotes from service providers.
- Which supplies and tools will you need? Also think about your own protection –
facemasks, gloves and drop-sheets may be necessary.
- Where will you go to source your supplies and tools? Ask family and friends if you can borrow costly tools, such as a drill or carpet steamer. Finally, it’s time for the real work to begin. Consider:
- Whether furniture will be left in the room during cleaning. If not, where will it be moved? How will you move it?
- Are you taking care of yourself? This means being careful on ladders and looking after your back and knees when lifting heavy items. It’s easy to get carried away once you start, so it may be useful to set a timer for regular lunch breaks.
- How will you make the cleaning process enjoyable? Play some music or ask friends to come over and help you.
