Will I still get an Age Pension?
Will I still get an Age Pension?

Beth would like to know if she will receive an Age Pension when she turns 65, or if she will have to remain on the Carer Payment.

Q. Beth

I have been unemployed for years and receiving Newstart Allowance. Lately I have been receiving the Carer Payment and Carer Allowance, but in four months’ time I will be 65 years old.

So, am I still entitled to receive the Age Pension payment when I turn 65? If so, how much will I get? And what should I do from now?

A. Before you reach the Age Pension eligibility age, Human Services will contact you to advise you of your options. The amount of payment for both the Age Pension and Carer Payment is the same, as it is based on your personal circumstances. You can also still receive the Carer Allowance while receiving the Age Pension. If you switch to the Age Pension and continue to receive the Carer Allowance, you will receive the annual Carer Supplement of $600 as well.

The difference between the two payments (Age Pension and Carer Payment) is that there are extra conditions that apply to the Carer Payment, of which you should be aware. They are essentially that you need to be caring for someone who meets the criteria. If you go overseas for an extended period of time, you may lose your payment and your circumstances will be subject to review.

You can find out more by visiting HumanServices.gov.au, or you can call 13 23 00 to confirm your eligibility for either payment.

Sorry parti, but retired politicians are or should be exempt from being cared for, because they never cared anyhow. The odd one perhaps did, maybe, then again one could argue they are all odd, at odds, or, I think I should shut up.
