Supermarket encounter that made the day

One morning, in the ‘refrigerated aisle’ of our local supermarket, we had a wonderful experience.

Trailing behind my partner, aka ‘The Management’, with the trolley – I am the only nonagenarian trolley boy in this town – we saw an elderly guide dog accompanying a young man. On the opposite side of the aisle, with her trolley, was a pretty young woman. She gave us a radiantly beautiful smile and pointed to my headband, which warns people that I am legally blind and a traffic hazard.

She then said something and pointed to the young man and the dog. I ‘replied’ by smiling and pointing to my hearing aids, which are not working at all well. Her smile became even more radiant and she dropped into Auslan. I shook my head and smiled.

As we moved away, she crossed the aisle, tapped the young man on the shoulder, turned him, pointed in our direction and ‘said’ something to him – in Auslan. He gave us a brilliant smile, which we tried to return.

As we turned out of the aisle, I looked back to see them, hands on each other’s shoulders, smiling at each other.

Made the day.
