Margaret Whitlam was not only the much-loved wife of former Prime Minister Gough, she was a kind intelligent woman, who lived life to the full. 

Known as Doodles to her friends, Margaret Dovey loved nothing more than spending time at the beach soaking up the sun and competing in swim meets. But the sporting cahievements of this althetic young woman would pale in comparision to the work she did as wife to Australia’s Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam.

Keeping Gough on the straight and narrow was no mean feat, but Margaret relished her role, using her compassion and common touch to soften her husband’s often pompous manner. While Gough may have held the office, it was Margaret who held the people’s hearts.
