John Hurt

Hot on the heels of being honoured with a knighthood, John Hurt today turns 75. The actor has had many roles over his career, but is perhaps best-know for his portrayal of John (Joseph) Merrick in The Elephant Man.

The movie, directed by David Lynch, tells the story of Merrick, who is blighted by a truly horrible, disfiguring disease and also features Anthony Hopkins as Dr Treaves, the surgeon who showed kindness to the man considered a freak.

The Elephant Man will run on Broadway during the month of February, with Bradley Cooper playing the role of Merrick.

Why not watch the iconic scene from the railway station, where Merrick is teased and cornered, only to reveal the true horror of his disfigurement?
